Gerhard Eggers, born in 1948, is the president of the German Verein für Historische Fahrräder. In the East German Democratic Republic he learned the profession of a metal worker and car mechanic. In the 1970s he was a successful racing driver on East German MZ motorbikes and took part in many international race competitions in the east block countries. His young son ignited his interest in bicycles when he brought home an antique Adler bottom bracket three speed bicycle from the 1930s and Eggers gave up motorcycle racing. As an antique bicycle collector he gathered at some time over three hundred bicycles but now he has gone down to thirty. His special interests are local bicycle manufacturers from his home area around Leipzig. So came bis interest in Richard Weber, citizen of Leipzig and inventor of the idea of a bicycle dynamo. At the winter meetings of the Verein he gave talks about the history of the Berko bicycle dynamos, Richard Weber’s biography, the frame tubes of the Helical bicycles and bicycle caricature drawings by Leon Feininger. At the age of 70 he is still working full time as a mechanic in a company for forklift trucks.
