David V. Herlihy (born 30 July 1958) is a historian and freelance writer specialized in bicycle and motorcycle history.
He is the author of two books (Bicycle: The History with Yale University Press, 2004; and The Lost Cyclist, with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; 2010) and numerous articles, including annual contributions to Adventure Cyclist. His seminal research on the origins of the bicycle is well known internationally.
He is responsible for the naming of the Pierre Lallement bicycle path in Boston, and for a plaque by the New Haven Green commemorating America’s first recorded bicycle ride there in April 1866. He was the curator of two major exhibitions, The Bicycle Takes Off (Lockwood-Mathews Museum of Norwalk, CT 2000-2002) and Round Trip (UCLA’s Fowler Art Museum 2014-2015.)
